I’m a black, francophone, artist, woman, living in rural Canada. If that’s not unusual enought I’m also a church going Sci-Fi fan. Yeah.. why not. Really it all means that I’m a pretty socially conscious person. Issues of race, racism, gender, politics, environment and futuristic prognosis are fascinating to me.
The fact is, that as a black woman, born and bread in a completelly white environment I can not help being aware of the world around me. My parents came from one of the poorest nations in the world but in my neighborhood I was known as the kid living in the big house on top of the hill. Yep I was spoilled, but not blind. The contrasts, the iniquities and bizarre faith of this world are embeded in me by birth… granted the years of brutal school bullying taught me a lesson or two.
Today I’ve done away with much of the anger of my younger years and I’ve married a white man…of all people. There’s a baby on the way and the burdon is on me to transmit the culture and the knowledge of the black experience without crippling my child with anger or deniying him the right to not care. I feel the pang.
Why Buckweat? Welll… ever since I decided to go natural, that’s what my hair looks like when I wake up in the morning. Heh, I’ve got nappy hair what can I do?
